For the fiscal year 2003, there were 1,177,292 Chapter 7 bankruptcies.

Chapter 13 bankruptcy filing was reported to be 473,763 in 2003

There were 10,144 Chapter 11 bankruptcy filings in 2003

California had the most Chapter 7 Bankruptcy filings in 2003

Key Bankruptcy Findings:

Total Bankruptcy filings increased 7.4% from 2002 to 2003

Only California, Hawaii, New Mexico, Rhode Island, and Washington, D.C., saw slight declines in bankruptcy filings between 2002 and 2003.

In 2000, 870,805 Chapter 7 Bankruptcies were filed... by 2003 chapter 7 bankruptcies had increased by over one-third.

Over the period of a decade from 1993 to 2003, TOTAL Bankruptcy filings had increased from 897,231 to 1,661,996!


ADDITIONAL BANKRUPTCY CONCERNS

As Consumer debt increases, and the Federal Reserve has indicated that household debt is at a record high relative to disposable income, some analysts observe a similar increase in consumer bankruptcy. Personal Bankruptcy Filing continues to increase steadily. Since 1992, individual bankruptcy filings have reached an all time high, with 1994 and 1995 being the only years experiencing a decrease.
