Fayetteville, North Carolina
(settled around 1739) is the home of four designated historic
districts:
Downtown Historic District, Haymount Historic
District, Liberty Point National Register District, Market House Square
National Register District.
For 84 years, Pope AFB has been part of the
Fayetteville family. Begun as Pope Field in 1919, it is named for the first
airman to die therem1st Lt. Harley Halbert Pope. 1947 saw Pope Air Force
Base change its name and refine its mission from barnstorm flying to cool,
professional, and technologically advanced aviation. A-10 thunderbolt
squadrons (the "flying tigers") and the C-130 Hercules are an
integral part of our War on Terror and are serving in both Afghanistan and
Iraq.
Fort
Bragg is the winner of the Best
Post contest by the Army Times. Not just the Best Post Overall - but
also the Best Post for Retirement. Quality of life in the Fayetteville area
is so excellent that many do not think of returning after their tour of duty
at this base is over. The History of Fort Bragg is the History
of XVIII Airborne Corps. Fort Bragg was established in 1918 for military
training. The climate allowed year-round military operations, and
transportation was established in the area (river and railroad). Camp Bragg
was named for General Braxton Bragg. Fort Bragg offers a historical
map of the bases and tours may be arranged.
With an overall population of over 330,000,
Fayetteville is a Metro Area all its own - the 4th largest metropolitan area
in North Carolina. Cumberland
County's county seat, Fayetteville was named for Revolutionary hero, the
Marquis de Lafayette.
Unemployment is only 4.5 % in Fayetteville,
and the economy, the climate, and access to world class medical care, and
educational facilities, have created a community with one of the highest
standards of living in the East. Higher learning is served by the Fayetteville
State University (founded 1867), The University of North Carolina, Fayetteville
Technical Community College, and Methodist
College (est.1955). Fayetteville's malls and stores serve other
municipalities, such as Falcon, Godwin, Hope
Mills, Linden, Spring
Lake, Stedman and Wade, as they share the easy access and high
employment of Cumberland County.
Fayetteville's
downtown revitalization retains the established
culture and the arts, preserves Fayetteville's history, and has brought new
life to the downtown business community. The banks of the Cape Fear River
are once again the focal point of the city. The
Cape Fear Regional Theatre, originally the Fayetteville Little Theatre
is enjoying the resurgence of nearby shopping and dining, and the new Cape
Fear River Trail boasts four miles of bicycle and pedestrian greenways.
Antique shops, museums, galleries, boutiques, and a micro-brewery are
thriving in the downtown districts.
Fayetteville is located between Raleigh,
NC and Laurinburg,
NC, along US Highway 401. Nearby communities are Dunn,
Falcon, Godwin, Hope
Mills, Linden, Spring
Lake, Stedman and Wade.
While there, do not miss the Cape Fear Living History Society at Liberty
Hall, Fayetteville's Market House, and Cool Spring Tavern (built 1788). The
Cape Fear Conservatory is an atrium with freshwater ponds, waterfalls, and
streams with exhibits of aquatic life native to the Cape Fear River and its
watershed. Yes, that includes alligators! Recreation includes swimming, and
fishing. Local sports teams include Fayetteville
