Fayetteville, North Carolina (settled around 1739) is the home of four designated historic districts:

Downtown Historic District, Haymount Historic District, Liberty Point National Register District, Market House Square National Register District.

For 84 years, Pope AFB has been part of the Fayetteville family. Begun as Pope Field in 1919, it is named for the first airman to die therem1st Lt. Harley Halbert Pope. 1947 saw Pope Air Force Base change its name and refine its mission from barnstorm flying to cool, professional, and technologically advanced aviation. A-10 thunderbolt squadrons (the "flying tigers") and the C-130 Hercules are an integral part of our War on Terror and are serving in both Afghanistan and Iraq.

Fort Bragg is the winner of the Best Post contest by the Army Times. Not just the Best Post Overall - but also the Best Post for Retirement. Quality of life in the Fayetteville area is so excellent that many do not think of returning after their tour of duty at this base is over. The History of Fort Bragg is the History of XVIII Airborne Corps. Fort Bragg was established in 1918 for military training. The climate allowed year-round military operations, and transportation was established in the area (river and railroad). Camp Bragg was named for General Braxton Bragg. Fort Bragg offers a historical map of the bases and tours may be arranged.

With an overall population of over 330,000, Fayetteville is a Metro Area all its own - the 4th largest metropolitan area in North Carolina. Cumberland County's county seat, Fayetteville was named for Revolutionary hero, the Marquis de Lafayette.

Unemployment is only 4.5 % in Fayetteville, and the economy, the climate, and access to world class medical care, and educational facilities, have created a community with one of the highest standards of living in the East. Higher learning is served by the Fayetteville State University (founded 1867), The University of North Carolina, Fayetteville Technical Community College, and Methodist College (est.1955). Fayetteville's malls and stores serve other municipalities, such as Falcon, Godwin, Hope Mills, Linden, Spring Lake, Stedman and Wade, as they share the easy access and high employment of Cumberland County.

Fayetteville's downtown revitalization retains the established culture and the arts, preserves Fayetteville's history, and has brought new life to the downtown business community. The banks of the Cape Fear River are once again the focal point of the city. The Cape Fear Regional Theatre, originally the Fayetteville Little Theatre is enjoying the resurgence of nearby shopping and dining, and the new Cape Fear River Trail boasts four miles of bicycle and pedestrian greenways. Antique shops, museums, galleries, boutiques, and a micro-brewery are thriving in the downtown districts.

Fayetteville is located between Raleigh, NC and Laurinburg, NC, along US Highway 401. Nearby communities are Dunn, Falcon, Godwin, Hope Mills, Linden, Spring Lake, Stedman and Wade. While there, do not miss the Cape Fear Living History Society at Liberty Hall, Fayetteville's Market House, and Cool Spring Tavern (built 1788). The Cape Fear Conservatory is an atrium with freshwater ponds, waterfalls, and streams with exhibits of aquatic life native to the Cape Fear River and its watershed. Yes, that includes alligators! Recreation includes swimming, and fishing. Local sports teams include Fayetteville Patriots - NBDL Basketball, Cape Fear Wildcats - Arena 2 Football, Fayetteville Swamp Dogs - CPL Baseball, Fayetteville Fire Antz - ACHL Hockey, Carolina Hurricanes, Carolina Mudcats, Carolina Panthers, and the Charlotte Knights. Fayetteville is noted for Golfing and NASCAR races.
